Spike Lee’s daughter and son have been crowned 2021 Golden
Globe Ambassadors. Jackson Lee is the first African American male bestowed with
the title.
The 2021 Golden Globes have redefined the tone of their
culture in a historic way. Ali Sar,
President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, has revealed that the
2021 Golden Globe Ambassadors are Satchel Lee, 26, and Jackson Lee, 23, the
sibling children of acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee. The
first African American sibling Golden Globe Ambassadors were officially
announced during a January 12, Tuesday morning virtual press conference.
Not only are Jackson and Satchel Lee the first African
American brother and sister duo to hold the position, but Jackson is also the
first Black male ambassador in Golden Globe history. The move is a true
statement by the Golden Globe Awards.
During the virtual press conference, Satchel
and Jackson announced their chosen philanthropic organizations, which will each
receive a $25,000 grant. Satchel chose Callen-Lorde Community Center, which supports
the LGBTQIA+ community’s health care needs.
Jackson chose Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, an organization known
for supporting the underserved community with role models and mentors.
“We’re proud to carry our father’s
legacy of storytelling to bring attention to communities close to our hearts,”
said Satchel Lee, Creative Director of DROME, a queer and intersectional arts
and cultural magazine.
The role of the Golden Globe Ambassador
is awarded to young persons who assist in the annual Golden Globe Awards
presentation, by presenting trophies to the winners and wrangling them while
on-stage. Celebrity parents have long fiercely competed for their children to
take the coveted role, awarded by the President of the Hollywood Foreign Press
Association and selected by the Association’s board. Selection as a Golden
Globe Ambassador traditionally elevates media careers. This honor will amplify
both Jackson and Satchel’s notable strides in the arts.
