In a statement issued on Thursday, Skittles addressed the Trayvon Martin case that has gained media attention over the past two weeks. Martin, who was carrying a can of Arizona ice tea and a pack of Skittles when he was shot to his death by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Fla., has been an added element to protests. Many were calling for the candy wrapper to be sent to the police chief, Bill Lee Jr.

Skittles says: “We are deeply saddened by the news of Trayvon Martin’s death and express our sincere condolences to his family and friends. We also respect their privacy and feel it inappropriate to get involved or comment further as we would never wish for our actions to be perceived as an attempt of commercial gain following this tragedy.”

Should Skittles have crafted a different response? Or, was their statement appropriate?
