Late last month, Florida teen Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in a gated community by a White neighborhood watch captain. Even though George Zimmerman, the man who slain the youth, admitted to police he shot the young man, he still walks as a free man. Martin's family is now pleading for answers and demanding justice be enacted swiftly.
The 17-year-old high school junior, who lived with his mother in Miami, was visiting his father and stepmother in Sanford, a suburb of Orlando, on the weekend of February 26. During halftime of the NBA All-Star Game, Martin's family said he walked to a nearby convenience store to get some candy for his young brother. On the way back, according to reports, Martin caught the attention of 26-year-old college student George Zimmerman, who also happens to be the self-appointed captain of The Retreat at Twin Lakes neighborhood watch.
Armed with a 9mm handgun, Zimmerman trailed the boy, even calling 911 to tell the operator there was a "suspicious person in the area." You know how the rest of the story goes. Martin was found lying face down on a patch of grass about 70 feet from his family's home, a pack of candy in one pocket and an iced tea in the other.
Why hasn't George Zimmerman been arrested and brought to justice? How can this senseless and racially motivated killing be justified?
