Snarky “Chimichanga” Tweet by Obama Official Offends

Sometimes it is best to leave Twitter to the experts, a fact President Obama’s campaign manager Jim Messina found out yesterday. The man known around Washington, D.C. as “the fixer,” intended to apply his tactics to jab Republicans over weak Latino support, but the plan backfired when dozens of Latino Republicans fired back. Messina, speaking through Twitter, tweeted, “The chimichanga? It may be the only thing Republicans have left to offer Latinos.”

Univision’s Jordan Fabian called the message, “Eyebrow raising,” and many other Latino Republicans followed suit in saying the comment was “racist,” “culturally-insensitive,” and demanded Messina to apologize. “The fact that the campaign manager of President Obama’s re-election campaign thinks it’s appropriate to disseminate insulting jokes about the Hispanic community is a perfect example of the kind of empty rhetoric that characterizes this White House’s so-called outreach to Latinos.”

Should President Obama have to step in to handle this potentially crippling PR gaffe? How will this affect the much-rumored “Black/Brown” divide?
