Teacher Arrested at Board Meeting After Criticizing Boss’ Raise

Public outcry ensued earlier this week when a teacher was arrested after inquiring about a superintendent’s raise.

Video of Deyshia Hargrave being arrested during a Monday night school board meeting has gone viral. Hargrave, who teaches at Rene A. Rost Middle School in Louisiana, expressed indignation over the $30,000 raise of her boss at the gathering. When she stood up, a cop approached her and attempted to get her to sit back down.

“Is it against policy to stand?” she asks.

When she begins to exit the meeting, the cop follows Hargrave and arrests her.

Hargrave yells in distress as the officer escorts her out of the building. The Washington Examiner reports she was arrested on “remaining after being forbidden.”

She returned to work Wednesday. School officials said they’ve received numerous death threats in response for allowing the officer’s handling of the instructor. The school was even forced to go into lock-down.

But the superintendent whose salary Hargrave questioned during the meeting, will not apologize for what happened.

Vermillion Parish Superintendent Jerome Puyau told KATC 3 the cop acted in accordance with his wishes.

“Our people know what to do, and when it happened, that person … that marshal acted in what we ask him to do,” Puyau told the outlet.

Meanwhile, Hargrave has received a plethora of support from the public. Fellow teachers and school officials gathered Tuesday to discuss the incident and show their support for Hargrave.

“By taking away my voice they’ve taken away — or tried to take away — my First Amendment rights to speak,” Hargrave said in a video posted on the Louisiana Association of Educators’ Facebook page. “Go to your local school board meetings. Speak out. Be vocal.”

School officials said they’ve received numerous death threats in response for allowing the officer’s handling of Hargrave. The school was even forced to go into lock-down.
