A New Jersey teen is being labeled a hero after she discovered a man locked in a trunk near her home on Thursday.

17-year-old Kayla Rose was walking her dog in her Irvington, New Jersey neighborhood when she heard noises coming from a car parked on the street. “I heard knocking and scratching on the trunk of the car, and I just backed up because I was scared. And then I heard it again. And then I said, ‘Hello.’ And he was like, ‘Hello, can anybody help me,’” she said during an interview with Inside Edition.

After telling her mother what she heard, Rose informed her neighbors, who called police and attempted to help.

One neighbor, Joe Bollaro acted immediately. “I got a crowbar and tried to pop the trunk, but it just bent the metal,” Bollaro told WABC.  “The cops were coming, so . . . I said, ‘They’re coming. Hold on.’ I said, ‘Can you breathe?’ He said, ‘Yeah.'”

The victim, said to be between 18 and 20 years old, told police he was approached by two men around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night. Armed with guns, both suspects allegedly took him to several local banks and ordered him to withdraw money.

After he was beaten, the victim was placed in the trunk of a car, where he remained until Rose discovered him the following morning.

One suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident. JaVohn Berrouet, 24, was charged with carjacking, kidnapping, robbery and weapons offenses after authorities discovered a ski mask and a .45-caliber handgun in his home. Investigators are still searching for the second suspect.

According to WABC, the Union County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.
