Muhlaysia Booker, 23, was beaten to the point of unconsciousness in an apparent “act of mob violence” in April. More than a month later, Booker, a transgender woman, was found dead in Dallas from a gunshot wound, NBC reports.

According to Dallas Police Lt. Vincent Weddington, officers found Booker’s body lying face down on Saturday after responding to reports of a shooting. Weddington confirmed that her death was classified as “homicidal violence” but did not provide any other details.

Officials say it is unclear whether Booker was the victim of a hate crime.

Booker was assaulted by several attackers, who reportedly used homophobic slurs after she was involved in a minor car crash at the Royal Crest Apartments in April. The attack was captured on video and shared on social media, NBC Dallas-Fort Worth reports.

Edward Thomas, 29, was arrested and charged with assault. He admitted to assaulting Booker but denied using slurs.

Despite his involvement in the assault, there’s no evidence that Thomas is connected to the shooting, Weddington said.

While officials are investigating Booker’s death, Weddington said authorities are still trying to locate the other people involved in her assault.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings took to Twitter on Sunday to address Booker’s death and urged the public to come forward. “I am deeply saddened to learn of the murder of Muhlaysia Booker,” he said. “I call on anyone with information on this homicide to please contact the Dallas Police Department.”
