Trump Commutes Alice Johnson’s Sentence After Kardashian Visit

President Donald Trump has granted clemency to first-time nonviolent drug offender, Alice Marie Johnson, just one week after meeting with Kim Kardashian West, who pleaded her case, in the Oval Office, reports BBC News.

Johnson was sentenced to life after she was convicted on charges of conspiracy to possess cocaine and attempted possession of cocaine in 1996. She has spent the last 21 years at a federal prison in Aliceville, Alabama.

The beauty mogul became involved with Johnson’s case in October after she saw a viral video from Mic’s Opinion desk, which features Johnson, now a 63-year-old great-grandmother sharing her story from prison.

“Ms. Johnson has accepted responsibility for her past behavior and has been a model prisoner over the past two decades. Despite receiving a life sentence, Alice worked hard to rehabilitate herself in prison, and act as a mentor to her fellow inmates,” the White House said in a statement Wednesday (June 6) afternoon.

“While this Administration will always be very tough on crime, it believes that those who have paid their debt to society and worked hard to better themselves while in prison deserve a second chance,” the statement added.

Upon hearing the news Kardashian West took to Twitter to celebrate the pardon tweeting, “BEST NEWS EVER” and expressing her appreciation for President Trump and his senior adviser Jared Kushner.

Johnson is expected to be released from prison soon.
