A reputed Chicago gang member has been charged in a deadly gang-related shooting that led to the execution-style murder of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee, WFLD-TV reports.

Khalil Yameen is reportedly a member of the Gangster Disciples street gang. Police say the child was murdered after Yameen and another man killed Tracey Morgan and wounded his mother in 2015. Morgan’s brother, Corey sought revenge, officials say.

Detectives say Corey Morgan proclaimed that “he was going to kill grandmas, mamas, kids and all,” according to prosecutors. He, along with two fellow members of his gang lured Tyshawn from Dawes Park and into a nearby alley on Nov. 2 by promising to buy him candy. One of the men shot Lee execution style in the head.

Authorities believe the young child was targeted as part of a gang war. The Morgan brothers are members of the Bang Bang Terrordome gang, a faction of the Black P Stones. Police say they had been feuding with the Gangster Disciples faction that included Yameen and Tyshawn’s father, Pierre Stokes.

Tyshawn’s murder is believed to have been meant to avenge the earlier killing of Tracey Morgan.

Morgan, 25, died on Oct. 13 as he and his mother drove home from a police-sponsored meeting of parolees whose goal was to resolve gang-related conflict in the area. Morgan’s 56-year-old mother noticed they were being followed during the car ride, Assistant State’s Attorney Jamie Santini said.

As they approached 83rd and South Lafayette Street, the car passed them on the left, cut in front of them and stopped, Santini said. At the same time, another vehicle stopped behind the mother and son, boxing them in. That’s when Yameen and another gunman got out of the stopped vehicles, approached the Morgan’s and pumped 15 rounds into their vehicle.

Tracey Morgan was shot 11 times. His mother suffered a gunshot wound to the arm, but managed to still drive to a nearby gas station to call for help. Tyshawn was killed a couple of weeks later.

Yameen, 23, admitted his role in Morgan’s slaying to another person and was also recorded saying that he was armed and at the murder scene. Cellphone tower records also placed Yameen’s cell phone at the site of the parole meeting Tracey Morgan had attended. Calls made between Yameen and the second shooter just before the murder were also documented, Santini said.

Yameen was ordered held without bond on Thursday. Corey Morgan, Dwright Boone-Doty and Kevin Edwards—the alleged getaway driver in Tyshawn’s murder—are all currently awaiting trial.

Tyshawn’s father, Pierre Stokes, was held without bond in March after he was charged with shooting three people in the city’s Gresham neighborhood. One of those victims is the girlfriend of one of the men suspected of killing Tyshawn, officials say.
