University of Maryland Stabbing Death Investigated as Hate Crime

The FBI and local authorities are looking into whether the fatal stabbing of a Black college student who was killed while visiting the University of Maryland over the weekend was a hate crime.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Richard Collins III, was stabbed by a White University of Maryland student who is a member of a racist Facebook group. Collins was due to graduate from Bowie State University this week. He had completed ROTC at the school, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the army on Thursday.

He was 23.

22-year-old Christopher Urbanski has been charged with first-degree murder in the attack and is reportedly being held without bond.

“We are looking forward to the quickest investigation as possible,” Bowie State University President, Artie Lee Travis said. “Hate has no place in America. Hate has no place on a college campus where young minds are coming together to try to change the world.”

Collins was described by friends as vibrant, funny and outgoing. He had a desire to travel the world and go skydiving and surfing, his friend and fellow Bowie State University student Vidal Adams said.

“He wanted to be a general of the United States Army, that was his ultimate goal,” said Adams, a senior criminal justice major. “He was the definition of a leader. I can’t really say the same about a lot of people.”
