Stupid White men (if Drake can give his non-Black fans a pass to say the ‘N’ word, I feel Michael Moore has made it okay for me to use this phrase freely) are doing their damndest to outdo themselves. I’m not sure if the competition is intentional or de facto, but anti-gay advocate Bryan Fischer has taken a sharp the lead in the race following his latest despicable stunt. Fischer is a talk radio host, blogger, Director of Issues Analysis for the American Family Association, and now a bastardized version of Harriet Tubman in the land of delusion that is his mind.

Last week, Fischer declared on Twitter “we need an Underground Railroad to deliver innocent children from same-sex households.” He was not being facetious or metaphorical. His follow up tweet was a link to a Chicago Tribune story about a Mennonite minister who went on trial last week for helping a woman named Lisa Miller flee to Nicaragua with her daughter to evade court-ordered visitation with her former same-sex partner.

Fischer’s summation of the story: “Head of Underground Railroad to deliver innocent children from same-sex households goes on trial.”

As asinine as Fisher’s analogy is, it is a popular one.

Gary Buseck, legal director of Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, confirmed to the Chicago Tribune, “I think he’s in the equivalent of the [Underground Railroad] with the religious people…who see the gay rights agenda overwhelming their religious rights.”

‘Tis the trouble with clowns: no matter how goofy and ridiculous they are, they do have an audience. If recent gun violence is any indication, there’s reason to fear even while most sane people ridicule Fischer, who has responded to criticism of his gay kidnapping pledge with the claims that “we must obey God’s law, not man’s law.”

Now, it’d be wrong to say ‘let’s ask him if he’s ever worked on a Sunday,’ and if so, remind him that he is to be immediately stoned to death if given the wrong answer.

As the rest of the country slowly but surely grows up on its views about gays and lesbians, the older, unhinged and antiquated viewpoint holding members of community are using chance they get to argue for the opposite.

Enter Pat Robertson, renowned master of using the Bible to justify bigotry, who espoused a similar theme of anti-gay hatred last week by opining on The 700 Club that due to his interpretation of Leviticus, “God’s moral law” requires the land to “vomit out” the LGBT community. Not so shockingly, he forgot that he ought to lead by example through vomiting out his mixed-linen suit per Leviticus.

This all but emboldens Fischer and his followers.

On their blog, the Human Rights Campaign wrote: “Fischer’s call for kidnapping children from same-sex partners is not only offensive, but a harmful mischaracterization of families that struggle daily to provide loving and safe home environments despite significant legal, financial and dignitary inequality.”

True, but as both a gay and Black man, I find it especially maddening at how blatant this man exercised his White privilege. Not only is Fischer advocating direct attacks on gay families, he’s justifying it in a way that seeks to delegitimize slavery – all over his own pious complaints about some kid having two mommies or two daddies.

There is one somewhat bright spot: By the time his own children reach his age, not only will he be dead, but the world will be even less respondent to his point of view.

I just hope the lingering hatred that exists now won’t lead to someone following his call between now and then.
