According to a majority of white Americans in Virginia, they’re already having frank conversations about racism. And they’re doing so with Black people.

The Washington Post reports the a recent survey regarding voters in the state found that most people, regardless of their race, have have tough conversations regarding race and prejudice at least once in recent years.

The Post-Schar School poll cited 65 percent of white Virginia voters as having had frank conversations about racial equality or prejudice with a Black person in the past few years. 67 percent of Black Virginia voters said they had similar conversations with someone who wasn’t Black.

 

More young white voters reporting having the conversations with African-Americans (78 percent of them were under 40, compared to 69 percent of 40- to 64-year-olds and 45 percent of those over age 65).
In terms of political affiliation, 61 percent of white republicans said they’ve had frank conversations about race with someone who is Black, compared to 60 percent of Democrats.

The Post-Schar poll took place via phone from Sept. 28 through Oct. 2. It included a random sample of 1,121 Virginia adults with a margin of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
