Buffalo Bills cornerback Vontae Davis walked off the field and did not return during Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, according to CBS Sports.

The two-time NFL pro bowler reportedly changed into his street clothes and left the stadium. Coach Sean McDermott told WGR 550, “[Davis] pulled himself out of the game. He told us he was done.”

“This isn’t how I pictured retiring from the NFL,” Davis said in a statement after the 31-20 Bills’ loss. “Today on the field, reality hit me fast and hard: I shouldn’t be out there anymore.”
The players were shocked at the incident. “I’ve never been around that,” said defensive lineman Kyle Williams. “I think the only thing to say is that he’s where he needs to be right now. That’s the hard part about it, you can’t really wrap your mind around it.”

“I meant no disrespect to my teammates and my coaches. But I hold myself to a standard,” Davis explained. “Mentally, I always expect myself to play at a high level. But physically, I know that isn’t possible, and I had an honest moment with myself. While I was on the field, I just didn’t feel right, and I told the coaches, ‘I’m not feeling like myself.'”
