As we near the end of President Barack Obama’s administration in the United States of America, people across the country are anxious as they await the future of a country led by president-elect Donald Trump. In what appears to be a drastic shift in office, the people of the United States can only sit and wonder what’s to come following Trump’s inauguration.

In what is traditionally meant to be a seamless transition from one president to another, President Obama will hand over all executive power to Trump on January 20, 2017. (Le sigh)

During the campaign season, Trump’s controversial views on groups of different races and beliefs were made clear causing, on one hand people who praised him and the other a series of protest, even leading to the tag #TrumpNotMyPresident following the electoral results.

His views have led to acts of discrimination and violence and has seemingly divided the country further from the hope of change and unity that was presented by President Obama.

As we near the end of a Barack Obama administration, the HISTORY channel will take a deeper look into the history of the presidential hand-over process in Transition of Power: The Presidency,  an original, two-hour special.

The special features rare footage and interviews with presidential historians and the high-level executive staff that will shed light on the transitional process.

That process includes security briefings, cabinet selection and the transfer of the nuclear “football” — a briefcase containing special instructions and codes to authorize a nuclear attack while away from designated command centers.

Transition of Power  aims to also reveal the challenges of this task,  as it looks back on historical transitions between Presidents of the United States. Some of the more notable transition complications include the 2000 Gore/Bush hand-over and its impact on 9/11, declassified White House tapes of Richard Nixon’s interference with Vietnam, the sudden death of Franklin D. Roosevelt during the WWII crisis; and rare footage of Jimmy Carter’s efforts to release American hostages in Iran.

Transition of Power: The Presidency airs January 8th at 9pm ET/PT on the HISTORY Channel.
