A Metropolitan Police Department officer was arrested and charged with engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl before robbing her earlier this year.

WBAL reports that 27-year-old Chukwuemeka Ekwonna was arrested Thursday at his home in Glenn Dale, Maryland. He is charged with robbery, armed robbery, first- and second-degree assault, two counts of third-degree sex offense, reckless endangerment, prostitution and related weapons charges, officials said.

Police say the charges originate from a Jan. 9 incident when Ekwonna met the teenage girl on social media. She agreed to meet him to engage in sexual activity in exchange for money, police say.

The encounter reportedly took place inside his vehicle. According to officials, once it was over, Ekwonna produced a gun and demanded his funds back. The girl complied and Ekwonna left the vehicle.

The Department of Homeland Security notified police of the girl’s actions on Mar. 13. They were concerned about her involvement in possible human trafficking schemes. However, officials say the girl was engaging in such activity on her own. She is said to currently be receiving appropriate support services.

Ekwonna, who has been with the department for 14 months, no longer has police powers. He has also been placed in a non-contact status. The incident is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division. The Anne Arundel County Police Department has also launched an investigation into the incident.
