A white Chicago police officer charged in the death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald has pleaded not guilty in a Chicago court.

Jason Van Dyke is facing six counts of first-degree murder and one count of official misconduct in the teen’s death. Strong public outcry has been furious since city officials released dashcam video footage showing the veteran officer shooting the Black teenager 16 times.

McDonald, who was armed with a knife, was veering away from police when Van Dyke opened fire. Over the weekend, police in Chicago shot and killed two other people, a 55-year-old woman who was accidentally shot and a 19-year-old college student who police described as “combative” before he was shot.
