Dec 2021 / jan 2022: TESSA THOMPSON

Tessa Thompson has received praise for her striking performance in Passing. The story about the inner world of Black women is a narrative that’s all too rare in Hollywood. With her new production company, the acclaimed actress is determined to upend the system by telling more of our stories and creating more diverse and nuanced lead movie roles for Black actresses. “There is the opportunity to put so many different kinds of Black women on-screen in parts that don’t get to be the love interest, that don’t get to be the love seeker, that don’t get to take up space in that way,” says Thompson, who’s determined to reimagine the portrayal of Black actresses as different types of protagonists.

Joe Morton On FOX’s ‘Our Kind of People,’ Black Wealth and That Iconic ‘A Different World’ Wedding Scene

Actor Joe Morton may be most famously known as the diabolical dad to Olivia Pope on ‘Scandal’. His latest role is in ‘Our Kind Of People’ as the wealth and legacy building father, Teddy Franklin. In this interview with EBONY contributor Danielle Young, Morton shares his thoughts on the history of Black family wealth, why his character is a role he cherishes, and gives us the lowdown on ‘Inside the Black Box,’ a new show that he’s developing and more.

When it comes to curating a live performance, H.E.R. is one of the best performers in music. At any given moment, the accomplished musician can be seen playing the acoustic guitar, the electric guitar, the bass, or the keys. EBONY caught up with the star at her  recent Apollo Theater performance and discussed the venue’s magic, why it’s important for her to use her voice to address the issues of our community, and whether she’ll be dropping a Christmas album soon.

Keith Major: Power Portraiture

As a freelance photographer, Keith Major shot a number of covers for EBONY, featuring celebrities like Queen Latifah, Tyra Banks, Jesse Williams, Harry Belafonte, Zendaya, and Jennifer Hudson. Now as the brand’s Photo Director, he is ushering in a new chapter for EBONY, while reimagining its visual identity. “Being the Photo Director at EBONY is a very new lane for me after freelancing for so many years,” he shares. The lensman’s genius was on full display at the 2021 EBONY Power 100 Gala, where he shot a series of stunning portraits. “I had the chance to photograph these honorees and dignitaries without a big production set or the fanfare, which made it easier for me to get down to their essence.” Click below to view more of his stunning work.
