A Florida police officer who fatally shot a man whose car broke down last month has been fired.

Palm Beach Gardens police Officer Nouman Raja, who was in plainclothes when he shot 31-year-old Corey Jones along a highway on Oct. 18, had been on paid leave since the incident.

An investigation will determine whether charges will be filed against Raja. Raja was hired in April, and on a probationary period at the time of incident.

The city did not give a reason for his firing, other than to say the firing was within the city’s rights, given the probationary period of his employment. In a release the city said it had been “cautiously and methodically considering (Raja’s) employment status.”
