EBONY: What prompted you to become a fitness trainer and why do you focus on “gym-less” workouts?

Nic: I actually started training friends at the age of 14. I’ve always had a passion for fitness and being an overall active person. I would come up with really fun outdoor circuits. After giving birth to my son I went through a little bit of depression. I never thought that I would be a mom at the tender age of 20. So, when I turned 22 years old, I would go to the gym and I would workout on these machines that I had no idea how to use. I was very tiny but I also had a nice core from nursing my child for 2 years. Women would come to the gym and point at me like, “Oh my God, I want to look like her,” and I’m like, really? Me? Wow!!

So, I finally went and got certified and started building my clientele. After years of being in the gym and not being happy. The machines were always taken. People were always chatting and standing around. I just felt like that wasn’t a place for me to be. So, I started training outdoors at a local park. I loved the fresh air and the energy there. I would bring my yoga mat, resistance bands, jump rope and a bottle of water. People would walk past and give compliments and it just made me feel amazing. I had this whole who needs a Gym membership when nature is your playground attitude. You don’t need any fancy equipment to get the results you want.

EBONY: What advice do you give people trying to incorporate exercising back into their daily lives?

Nic: You must have the right mindset. If your mind isn’t right more than likely you aren’t going to start. You have to be committed. Schedule your workouts onto your agenda.

Start small. Commit to what you can. Something is always better than doing nothing at all.

EBONY: What are 5 goals you would like to reach by the end of the year?

Nic:

  • Start a summer health and fitness program for children.
  • Be able to donate 10k to my son’s school
  • I would like to reach my goal weight of 145 lbs. (the struggle is real)
  • Buy a new home
  • To network and empower other women to recognize how to overcome challenges, their way of thinking and living healthy lifestyles.
