Bryan Stevenson

Founder/Executive Director, Equal Justice Initiative

The attorney and author of the New York Times best-seller Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption created the nonprofit organization to offer legal representation to the unjustly incarcerated. In April 2018, he opened The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration in Montgomery, Alabama. The museum educates visitors from across the country about the role slavery played in shaping today's Black experience. Stevenson shows the direct link from slavery to mass incarceration and helps visitors better understand the history of racism, lynching and segregation. His continued work with the Equal Justice Initiative was acknowledged in 2014 by the Lannan Foundation, which awarded him its Cultural Freedom prize. In October 2018, Stevenson was honored by Harvard University with the W.E.B. Du Bois Medal-along with Colin Kaepernick, Dave Chappelle, Florence C. Ladd and others-for his contributions to African-American history and culture.
