Chicago Police have arrested a person they believe was a getaway driver in the slaying of Cook County Circuit Court Judge Raymond Myles and they are looking for at least two other suspects in the crime.

Chief of Detectives Melissa Staples told reporters at a Wednesday evening news conference that police have arrested Joshua Smith, 37, in connection with the shooting death of Myles, 66, and his 52-year-old girlfriend, who was with him at the time. She was wounded in the leg, but is expected to survive. Authorities say that the killing was not a random act, but rather a “targeted robbery,” but it was unclear exactly who the target of the robbery was. Smith was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and armed robbery.  He was expected in court on Thursday for a bond hearing.

Staples said case was still “open and ongoing.” She said police ballistics found that the shell casings from the gun used to kill Myles were also used in a January robbery, in which another victim was shot, but survived. “We have no indication it was related to that shooting in January,” said Staples.

Surveillance cameras attached to homes in the area helped detectives with information leading to Smith’s arrest. The cameras captured the vehicle that police believe was used in the robbery and when it was found, detectives noted that it had two different front and rear license plates. They questioned the owner of the vehicle and do not believe that person was connected to the shooting, although records show that Smith shares an address with that person.

“The placement and the concentration of cameras in and outside of the judge’s neighborhood was instrumental for detectives to get a jump-start on this case,” Staples said.

Police did not specify what role Smith played in the alleged robbery, but sources within law enforcement told the Chicago Tribune they believe he drove the getaway car for two other assailants. They are still looking for the gunman and another individual they believe was connected.

Smith was convicted of an armed robbery in 2003, for which he served six years in prison.

Myles was going to exercise with his girlfriend just before 5 a.m. Monday, police say. But as she left the home on Chicago’s south side, an attacker held the woman at gunpoint, shooting her in the leg. Hearing the commotion, Myles rushed to her aid and confronted the suspect but was shot several times.

The FBI has offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to arrests in the case.
