Regina King won her first Golden Globe on Sunday night, for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in the Barry Jenkins-directed film If Beale Street Could Talk. During her acceptance speech, the actress/producer pledged to increase the number of women employed on her future projects.
After thanking several people including Jenkins, King told her peers to consider using their platforms to bring awareness to social issues.
“So often everyone hears us on the red carpet, and they say, ‘We’re using the time to talk about ourselves,’” King said.
“The reason why we do this is because we understand that our microphones are big, and we are speaking for everyone,” she continued. “And I just want to say that I’m going to use my platform right now to say in the next two years, everything that I produce, I’m making a vow—it’s going to be tough—to make sure that everything that I produce that is 50 percent women.”
“And I just challenge anyone out there who is in a position of power, not just in our industry, in all industries — I challenge you to challenge yourselves and stand with us in solidarity and do the same,” the Golden Globe winner said in conclusion.
