Rep. Maxine Waters (D-California) said Thursday death threats against her have increased since she made comments telling protestors to heckle President Donald Trump’s administration officials in public, CNN reports.
Waters had scheduled appearances in Alabama and Texas this weekend, but had to cancel them because her office received threatening messages and “hostile mail.”
“As the President has continued to lie and falsely claim that I encouraged people to assault his supporters, while also offering a veiled threat that I should ‘be careful’, even more individuals are leaving (threatening) messages and sending hostile mail to my office,” she said in a statement to CNN.
The California Democrat said that received threats of being lynched and shot, including “one very serious death threat,” all of which are being investigated by the United States Capitol Police.
“There was one very serious death threat made against me on Monday from an individual in Texas which is why my planned speaking engagements in Texas and Alabama were cancelled (sic) this weekend,” she continued. “This is just one in several very serious threats the United States Capitol Police are investigating in which individuals threatened to shoot, lynch, or cause me serious bodily harm.”
Republicans and Democrats heavily criticized Waters for her comments last week saying that people should not welcome Trump’s Cabinet members.
“Let’s make sure we show up wherever we have to show up. And if you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd. And you push back on them. And you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere. We’ve got to get the children connected to their parents,” she said on Saturday.
Trump tweeted on Monday that Waters wanted his supporters to be harmed.
The congresswoman accused the president of lying, denying that she asked for people to harm anyone.
“I believe in peaceful, very peaceful protests,” Waters said Monday on Capitol Hill. “I have not called for the harm of anybody. This President has lied again when he’s saying that I’ve called for harm.”
