Robert DeNiro has reportedly split from his wife of over 20 years, Grace Hightower.

“Sometimes things don’t work out the way you hope or want them to,” said a source close to the family to PEOPLE, revealing that the couple are currently separated and living apart.

The Goodfellas star, 75, married Hightower, 63, in 1997 after a decade of courtship. The couple share two children together: 20-year-old son Elliott and 6-year-old daughter Helen Grace.

DeNiro filed for divorce once before in 1999, engaging in a custody dispute over their son. Eventually, the pair smoothed things out, renewing their vows in 2004 in front of A-list friends like Martin Scorsese and Meryl Streep.

Sputnik News reports many fans believe their separation may be politically motivated, as Hightower is a reported Trump supporter while DeNiro has publicly criticized the POTUS on several occasions.

“Rumors running rampant De Niro’s wife of 20 years & mother to two of his kids, was a #MAGA #Trump fan making #DeNiro go into panic, near heart attack modes, lose sleep & walk down New York City sidewalks cursing ‘f*ck Trump ’cause you’re not f*cking me,’” reads a tweet from Zenith News.

Neither DeNiro nor Hightower have addressed separation reports.

The Oscar-winner was previously married to Diahnne Abbott, with whom he shares two children — daughter Drena, 47, and son Raphael, 42.
