Women's History Month is in full swing, and Black women in Hollywood have taken over social media with a viral dance challenge. Last week, Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth Carter set out to “show the world when women unite anything is possible” by calling on her famous friends and asking them to dance to or lip synch their favorite empowering song.
Tasha Smith, Angela Bassett and Sheila E were among the first celebs to answer the call. The trio pulled out all the stops and shared a full-on recreation of Sheila E.’s hit “The Glamorous Life.”
Gabrielle Union and her adorable baby girl, Kaava James Union Wade, joined the fun. The Being Mary Jane star explained her decision to dance to Mary J. Blige's "Not Gon' Cry." "We have all been through something in this life. We've all fallen and didn't want to get up. We've had our hearts broken," she wrote. "We've all experienced failures. All women share these common truths and we can ALL rise when we stick together and uplift each other."
Halle Berry showed off her skills as she danced to Destiny's Child. " This one goes out to the incredible female survivors I have encountered in my life, the women who have the tenacity to live on their own terms,” the actress said. “The ones who take risks, hustle hard and will stop at nothing to provide the best life for themselves and the people they love. Let’s keep this going!”
June Ambrose shouted out the Fresh Air Fund while dancing to Shania Twain's "Feel Like a Woman" in her #Womendancingtogether entry. "One project I’m proud of is @TheFreshAirFund, which is led by some great women. We need more NYC kids to have a free Summer experience. If you live in the five Boroughs You can make your mark for #womenshistory month," she wrote.
Kelly Rowland showed off her skills while listening to the City Girls album cut "Act Up." Said the former Destiny's Child member, "As women, we experience a lot of the same challenges & are more alike than we know. No matter our background, ethnicity, or religion. We must move as one. Dance, sing, & fight for our rights together.”
Empire star Vivica A. Fox answered Smith’s call to join the challenge by putting a unique spin on Queen Latifah’s “U.N.I.T.Y.”
