Lifestyle brand Sanctuaire, which is centered on the products, places, and practices that create a sanctuary in our life, has released its first candle collection. Its “Plage Noire" collection made up of 3 beeswax candles—The Inkwell, Azurest and Haven—are all named in honor of African American leisure communities.
"These communities were founded as places of retreat during segregation and the Jim Crow era when Black people were forbidden from many resorts, pools and beaches. Through this home and fine fragrance collection, we hope to capture the essence of these beach communities—the Joy, Resistance, Peace, Resilience, and Rest that are so vital to America’s past and present stories," said Sanctuaire founders
Sanctuaire also partnered with African-American perfumer Yvonna Kopacz-Wright to concoct each candle's aroma. The brand's focus is wellness and wholeness; thus, it was important for it to produce non-toxic candles. Beeswax candles provide the cleanest burn of any candle and cleanse, purify and improve the air quality while they burn. The negative ions that beeswax candles emit not only remove dust, pollen, and toxins from the air but also positively affect our mood, energy, and health.
