While police body cameras have seemingly had little impact on their actual behavior, one White Tennessee sheriff’s troublesome views are now being exposed because of one. According to the New York Daily News, a police body cam picked up disturbing audio from Sheriff Oddie Shoupe, who is now being sued by the family of unarmed gunshot victim, Michael Dial, 33.

Shoupe instructed police to shoot Dial not because they/ the public were in imminent danger, but because he didn’t want to damage police vehicles.

“I said, ‘Don’t ram him, shoot him,’” Shoupe said after officers engaged in a 17-mile chase with Dial’s truck going a maximum of 50 miles per hour. “F*ck that sh*t, ain’t gonna tear my cars up. But I got two cars tore up again.”

Upon learning his men killed Dial after arriving on the scene, Shoupe responded with, “I love this sh*t. I thrive on it.” He later went on to brag, “Let me tell you something. If they don’t think I’ll give the order to kill that mother*cker, they’re full of sh*t.”

According to Dial’s wife, Robin Spainhoward, the order was uncalled for.

“It’s not only inappropriate but also unconscionable. The decision to order the use of deadly force when not physically present to evaluate the situation speaks volumes as to the malicious and sadistic mindset of Sheriff Shoupe.”

While victim Michael Dial was White, his death speaks to the abuse of power exhibited by many cops. Are you surprised by Sheriff Shoupe’s statements?
