Smokey Robinson was a major part of the Motown sound, writing hits for the Detroit label’s roster of stars. Robinson’s creamy vocals and ability to pen the sweetest tunes, not only for himself, but also for groups like The temptations and the Supremes, have fostered and launched several successful careers.
From his days as a member of the Miracles, to his career as a solo artist who released such hits such as “Cruisin” and “Being With You,” Robinson’s presence in the music industry has not gone unnoticed nor unappreciated.
In fact, in 2015, BET honored Robinson with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Now, he’s adding another “win” to his lengthy career full of accolades. Recently, the Library of Congress announced it would present the iconic songwriter with the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
“His rich melodies are works of art – enduring, meaningful and powerful,” David S. Mao, acting Librarian of Congress, said in a statement.
As a singer, songwriter and producer, Smokey Robinson’s legacy is one filled melodies that connect the with heart and soul.
The Gershwin Prize will be presented to Robinson in Washington, D.C. in November.
