Skyzoo and Talib Kweli salute their hometown hero, Alicia Keys keeps the birthday party going and Charlie Wilson and Chrisette Michele start V-Day early in this week’s Sonic Boom.

Skyzoo ft. Talib Kweli – “Spike Lee Was My Hero”

Brooklyn Rhyme slanger Skyzoo tapped BK MC Talib Kweli to pay homage to their hometown hero, Spike Lee. The soulful track can be found on Sky’s A Dream Deferred album, but the visuals have only recently been released. Sonically, “Spike Lee Was My Hero” manages to sound how you’d imagine a Spike Lee Joint would if it were music. Skyzoo and Kweli, both known for their lyrical prowess, rap circles around the Tall Black Guy-produced beat that goes heavy on the horns. Both MCs pay homage to Lee and other things that are so, so Brooklyn. Skyzoo even rocks thick black Cazals à la Mars Blackmon amid imagery of Jungle Fever and Do the Right Thing posters galore. Bonus: The man of the hour even makes a cameo in the video.

Charlie Wilson ft. Keith Sweat – “Whisper”

These OGs are back with a slow jam about, you guessed it, whispering sweet nothings in a lover’s ears. This one sounds very much like a throwback, but in a good way. It’s so 1990s that you almost expect men dressed in silk pajamas with the tops unbuttoned to come gyrating out of your iPhone. “Whisper” is from Wilson’s forthcoming album, Love, Charlie, available today.

Alicia Keys – “Brand New Me Part 2”

Alicia Keys, who just celebrated her 32nd birthday (January 25), released a celebration song by remixing her aptly titled song, “Brand New Me.” Days ago, Keys tweeted, “Ive been so overwhelmed by all of ur birthday love that I HAD 2do something extra special 4u! New Music! B.N.M Part 2!” The new version comes with samples of Crystal Waters’ “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless)” and the popular club song, “Percolator,” with a chopped and screwed portion that mixes the old with the new. Overall, it’s a whole lotta fun.

Chrisette Michele – “A Couple of Forevers”

“A Couple of Forevers” is Chrisette Michele’s ode to love, beautifully sung over the O’Jays’ “Stairway to Heaven.” And she released it right in time for Valentine’s Day. So if you’re into putting together love mixes and all that good stuff, this song needs to be a part of it. Also, if you’re planning to get married this year you might want to consider this for a first dance or a dedication song. It’s just that lovely, soft and pink. “A Couple of Forevers” is the first single from Michele’s forthcoming Better, slated for an April 30 release. “A Couple of Forevers” will be available on iTunes on Feb 5.
