Maybe ice hockey isn't a game synonymous with Black culture. But that doesn't mean we don't play it and play it well. For more than 100 years, there's been a history of Blacks in Hockey from Hippie Galloway and Fred Kelly to Willie O'Ree and Alton White.
Director Damon Kwame Mason put together "Soul on Ice: Past, Present and Future," which won an Audience Choice award at the Edmonton International Film Festival last year, to tell the story of Blacks who put on their skates blaze a trail on in the rink at a time when Blacks were more known for making a push into other professional sports.
"Soul on Ice" airs Wednesday Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. EST on the NHL Network.
