An African art exhibition, chocolate ice cream and Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. Those are just three things Barack Obama used to woo his work colleague Michelle Robinson when the future President and First Lady went on their first date in Chicago in 1989.

Now Southside With You – the romantic film detailing that fateful day – is hitting theaters later this month.

EBONY.com spoke with the film’s stars, Tika Sumpter and Parker Sawyers, about playing the iconic couple. We also got the scoop from R&B star John Legend, who served as an executive producer on the film.

“It shows both of them in a beautiful light,” Legend told EBONY.com. “They both keep each other humble too. You can tell that she isn’t too impressed with him to the point where she can’t keep him humble and bring him back down to earth sometime.”

Legend continued: “There will be time to do big biopics, but I think it’s cool to have a day in the life. And this was a day in the life of a couple we all know, but this is just a moment in time. This is just that one day when the spark of something beautiful was started.”

Check out what the stars had to say about this moment in time and why they think the time is right to bring the Obamas’ love story to the big screen.

Southside With You opens nationwide August 26.
