First-time Olympian Athing Mu turned heads during last month’s qualifying trials. And rightfully so, as the MVP for Team USA proved to be worth her weight in Olympic gold with a history-making win during the 800-meter finals.

Clocking in with a 1:55:21 time, Mu became the first American woman to win the event since 1968 at the Mexico City Games. Fellow first-time Olympian and American Raevyn Rogers earned bronze with a personal-best 1:56:81, just behind Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson, who won silver with a national-record placing time of 1:55:88.

Mu, 19, already came into the 2021 Tokyo Games as a favorite after shattering six collegiate records and a world record this past season as a freshman at Texas A&M. She made her pro debut and signed a Nike deal ahead of the Olympic trials, and showcased her mettle by finishing first in the 400- and 800-meter races at both the 2018 New Balance Indoor and Outdoors nationals.
