Is there nothing that Simone Biles’ mind and body cannot accomplish?!

The defending world champion followed her teased return to competition in gold-winning fashion by becoming the first woman to land the Yurchenko double pike vault move in competition. Taking place this past Saturday, May 22, at the GK US Classic in Indianapolis, Biles, 24, performed the high-difficulty move and arguably placed herself in the pantheon as one of the greatest gymnasts—man or woman—of all time.

For those that don’t know, the Yurchenko double pike is a roundoff onto the springboard, followed by a back handspring onto the vaulting table, and ending with a piked double backflip into the air to landing. In competition, Biles performed the move and then added two extra hops for a slightly imperfect landing.

The judges assigned a difficulty value of 6.6 while the Twitterverse scored her an 11.0 for her execution.

“I was just thinking, ‘Do it like training. Don’t try to overdo anything,’” Biles said shortly afterward. “It’s a new vault and I’m proud of how today went.” About the scoring, Biles said, “There’s no point in putting up a fight, because they’re not going to reward the correct value. But that’s OK. We’re just going to take it and just be quiet.”

Despite the judges at the U.S. Classic giving an off-putting score, Simone Biles continues to push the boundaries of her spot and challenge the notion of what’s possible. The four-time Olympic gold medalist successfully defended her GK US Classic all-around title with a score of 58.400 and also took the top score on both balance beam and floor exercise.
