After his electrifying run in the NBA playoffs, Warriors guard Stephen Curry became an authentic national sports figure. Accordingly, the endorsement and public appearance deals poured in. But Curry had a different idea.

He built his summer schedule around a trip 8,000 miles away to a refugee camp in Tanzania. There Curry helped hang mosquito netting for African refugees.

Curry was working with the national foundation Nothing But Nets, which solicits donations to buy netting for rural African populations. It is said that malaria kills more than 600,000 people each year, mostly children and mostly in Africa.

Rick Reilly, the ESPN columnist who started the foundation when he wrote a column about donations in 2006, accompanied Curry on the trip and was extremely impressed. “What 25-year-old NBA kid, coming off the season of his life, would do that?” Reilly asked. “He was hanging nets in mud huts.”
