Wedding Ceremony and Receptions: Singapore and New York, 2012

You and your husband’s wedding style:

“It’s funny, because someone actually commented that our wedding felt like a mix between Harlem Renaissance and The Color Purple. Too funny! My husband and I didn’t really have a specific theme, but wanted to keep things simple while acknowledging our ancestry. We sort of handpicked elements from our Black history (cotton stalks, jazz band, church fans, Yoruba rituals, djembe drum, etc.) and included them throughout the day.

“We wanted to create an environment that felt like we were in a living room, hence the penthouse loft space. We cut the cake in the kitchen, and had a lounge area with couches and chairs for our guests to relax in. It was beautiful and comfortable without being pretentious or overdone. We chose an all white palette to match the white loft space and compliment the shabby chic venue. The bridesmaids carried bouquets with wheat and roses, which coordinated well with the elegant and raw feeling of the day. In a nutshell, I would describe our style as classic and authentic.”

The bride on their most memorable moment:

“Were introduced at the reception and we came out to ‘If I Ruled the World’ by Nas/Lauryn Hill. I remember looking out into the crowd at all of our best friends on their feet, singing the chorus, fist pumping with so much joy on their faces. I felt so blessed to have all of our loved ones in one space lifting us up in love. It was such an incredible feeling.”
