Insecure star Issa Rae was the first-ever Black host of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards, and she commemorated the moment by only wearing outfits and accessories made by Black Designers.

“When we first spoke about CFDA she wanted to do something that was authentic and something that was honest to her,” her stylist Jason Rembert tells ELLE. “Issa was the underdog. She has been the underdog, and she continues to prevail and make a way for so many other people.”

Rae’s opening monologue included a dig at Kanye West and the convenience of his Blackness. The sentiment can easily be pointed at the fashion industry which continually draws influence from Black culture but rarely promotes or rewards it. No Black designer walked away a winner at this year’s awards. It was not due to a lacking as the actress shows by exclusively wearing garments made by Black designers.

Take a peek at the looks Rae wore from each designer.

The writer took her “rooting for everybody Black” comment quite literally even rocking accessories from Black-owned companies: Shauna Neely, Mateo Jewelry and JLANI jewels.
