One of my favorite trends for the summer bridal season has been bright, bold lips. More than ever, brides are moving away from the traditional nude lip and trading it in for a statement-making pout. The season’s it color, Radiant Orchid, is seen here on our beautiful model Yoko, as I demonstrated the best way to rock a shocking lip color on your big day. Check out the quick tips below on how you, too, can debut your bold lip as you walk down the aisle.

Always remember, if you’re going to do a bold lip…

The rest of your makeup should be kept simple. On Yoko, I used cool tone colors to compliment that rich, orchid color.

But don’t forget about your skin…

Be mindful and know that wearing a color this bright calls for a smooth canvas. In other words, highlighting your skin and creating an even palette is important. Don’t be afraid of a little contour and a soft smoky eye. On Yoko, I decided to go with a soft natural brow, a shimmering cool taupe for the eyes, and a smudged-out lash line for a sultry look without being too over the top. You don’t want overpowering eye makeup to compete with the bold lip.

Use this trick for a flawless finish…

Mix your foundation with a pea-size amount of moisturizer for a natural, dewy face.

Be sure to follow this one rule…

In the weeks leading up to your big day, drink plenty of water for hydrated lips. If you are experiencing dry lips on the day of, exfoliate with a product like Tarte’s Maracuja Lip Exfoliant ($16 Ulta.com).  Follow up with your favorite lip balm and you’re ready to apply your lipstick of choice.

Finally, apply your lipstick like this…

On lightly moisturized lips (blot off any excess lip balm), use a coordinating lip pencil to line your lips. Next, put on your first layer of lip color, preferably with a lip brush. Take a tissue, blot well and repeat those steps for extra intensity and longevity. Finally, take a tissue and split it apart. Hold one side up to your lips and gently pat them with a fluffy brush dipped in translucent powder.
