The senior prom is one of the most memorable moments in a young woman’s life. It represents the closing of one chapter, the opening of another, and the unknown possibility for greatness that extends past high school.

While some young ladies are fortunate enough to pick dresses off the rack at their favorite boutique, others will sit wondering how to participate in prom without the funds to purchase a dress.

Over the years, dozens of nonprofits and high schools have stepped in to the ‘Fairy Godmother’ role of making prom dreams a reality for local-area girls. And for the month leading up to prom night, prom goers can walk in and receive gently used dresses, shoes, and accessories from the likes of Cinderella’s Closet, The Princess Projects, and WGIRLS, Inc. in New York City for free.

Nicole Isom, a recipient of a Maryland-area prom dress initiative, was ecstatic when she found her prom gown at a dress drive in Gaithersburg.

“I’m so thankful that I found a dress that I love. I thought that I couldn’t afford to go to prom, but I can. This dress was something I would’ve picked out at a department store anyway.”

Taking the burden of prom-related costs off their shoulders ensures that so many well-deserving young ladies can celebrate their accomplishments before they move on to college and abroad.  So if you find yourself with a dress or two collecting dust in your attic, be sure to donate it to a participating recipient for prom dress donations.
