You don’t have to be up on the morning weather report to notice the drastic change in seasons. Winter is in full swing, which means heightened exposure to cold, dry temperatures and indoor heating. All of these elements can result in itchy, flaky and irritated skin. But don’t fret. Maintaining a flawless glow despite the blistering wind chills is possible, and we’ve called on Edwin Batista, the global director of education for Bliss Spa, to show you how. Check out his top four tips on altering your skin care regimen for the freezing months.

Relax, Relate, Release

Hit the spa! “While it is evident that cold temperatures and dry heat from indoor spaces can exacerbate dry skin conditions, the effects of cracking, peeling and splitting are really caused by the accumulation of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin,” Batista explains. “To ensure that skin stays hydrated, smooth and soft all winter long, we recommend spa-targeted treatments, such as our micro magic, to slough off the dead skin cells and reveal healthy, vibrant new skin.”

Butter Yourself Up

In addition to an amazing exfoliator like micro magic, winter weather calls for more soothing body moisturizers because your skin will be craving additional hydration. Swap out your lightweight lotions for rich body butters loaded with moisturizing ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil and nourishing botanicals.

Stay Cool

When it comes to bathing and showering, we may be inclined to run the water as hot as possible since it feels like the North Pole outside. “Though you may feel compelled to put the shower on its hottest setting, it’s best to avoid hot showers during colder weather. Here’s a tip: Put your shower on its hottest setting, and allow the bathroom to steam up. Then bring your water temperature down to lukewarm. By doing this added step, you create a warm, humid environment in your bathroom so your skin won’t dry out pre- or post-shower,” Batista suggests.

Head to Toe

Slathering your entire body in lush body butters and crèmes is just the start of maintaining smooth, silky skin all season long. You cannot neglect your hands and feet during the coldest months of the year. Apply a great exfoliating foot moisturizer, then put on your warmest socks before going to bed, Batista advises.
