As New York Fashion Week comes to an end, let’s take the time to reflect on the times that Black girls flourished all over The Big Apple. There were beautiful women of all shades and body types making a huge impact on this highly anticipated event. Let’s take a look:

Slay For Change

Stylist and political activist, Shayla Hill, came to NYFW on a mission to raise awareness. Hill, accompanied by her sister April Joi and two friends Kaye Washington and Labrea Gordon, stood outside of the shows wearing avant-garde pieces, accessorized with controversial messages. Hill wore a fuchsia jacket, topped with glitter that read, “VOGUE doesn’t care about EBONY issues” on the back. In an interview with Yahoo Style, Hill explained that this demonstration was inspired by the number of racial inequalities and police brutality cases that arose over the past year. The first case to hit home for Hill was death of Sandra Bland. “It was July of last year that she died and I felt really connected with the circumstance surrounding that story.” Hill told Yahoo. “She and I graduated from the same college around the same time.” Hill planned to attend NYFW to bring these issues to light but talked herself out of it. This year, Hill and the rest of her Black Girl Magic team came and definitely turned a few heads.

Self Love

Orange is the New Black actress, Dascha Polanco wore a form fitting, black and white-patterned bodysuit draped with an embroidered pink jacket during “The Blonds” NYFW show. With her Selena-inspired look, Polanco wanted to help promote self love for all body types. Her daring yet respected move, garnered lots of attention from the Interwebs.

Owning the UnderBoob

Despite the controversy surrounding Kanye Wests’ “Yeezy Season 4” show only requesting multiracial models, Teyana Taylor, still in her FADE glow, made a lasting impression. Taylor told Elle magazine that Kanye gave a couple days notice before the show but was happy to be apart of it. Taylor has been recently, most known for her under boob in all of her clothing. “Everybody, they made me the face of underboob. It’s never on purpose. I just got mommy titties.” Taylor told Elle. Instead of being self-conscious about the change in her breast, post partum, she decided to embrace her new body and own it.
