This week we caught up with Shauwn Diva, a Detroit-based nail artist showcasing her talent at Ah’Mazin Hair and Nail Salon.

The Trend: A little ’80s, a little Jackson Pollock, and whole lot of devil-may-care attitude are put into splatter paint nails. Nail art beginners rejoice, as this nail trend doesn’t require its wearer to pick just one color, nor does it require a steady hand. In fact, the genius behind the splatter paint nail trend is, the messier, the better. Read on to get the scoop on how this nail artist created this look and got started in the industry.

EBONY: How did you create this design?

Shauwn Diva: The splatter look was inspired by my friend’s shirt. I went on YouTube to find a tutorial that would help create the look. The tools I used [were] a straw and several neon colors from the China Glaze collection and, of course, a full set of stiletto nails polished white. Starting with one color at a time, I would stick the straw inside the polish and simply blow the polish from the straw onto the nail and repeat those steps with each polish.

EBONY: How did you become a nail artist?

SD: I received private lessons from a nail technician instructor while in high school. I now work out of a salon, but I do travel upon request. I have also done celebrities’ and reality stars’ nails.

EBONY: What do you feel is your artistic significance when it comes to nail art?

SD: When it comes to nail art, I am known for drawing celebrity faces on nails. I also just love creating fun, unique nails.
