That it’s 2017 and we still are using the words “first African American” to describe someone’s achievement is frustrating. And yet, here we are. Yesterday, when stylist and America’s Next Top Model judge, Law Roach was unveiled as one of the cover stars of The Hollywood Reporter’s Stylists & Stars issue, he became the first African American stylist in the publication’s history to do so.

Roach is a veritable force in the industry. Based in Los Angeles, the stylist and image maker has been the mastermind behind quite a few much discussed stars. His first client of note was Zendaya. Having collaborated with the multi hyphenate since her early days, he pulled her into fashion’s limelight scooping up best dressed lists and other clients along the way. In fact, it was because of that eye catching work with Zendaya which has seen her score a Dolce & Gabbana campaign as well as a gig with Madonna’s Material Girl brand, that some of Roach’s other clients like La La Anthony and Celine Dion came calling.

“I cannot describe the immense feeling of pride I have right now,” Zendaya wrote on Instagram of the cover which features both her and Dion alongside Roach, about to board a private jet. “You deserve this moment. This has been a cover we’ve been talking about since I was 14.” The gold star talent that Roach is working with that is missing from the image? Ariana Grande. The stylist helped to engineer the aesthetic for Grande’s current “Dangerous Woman” world tour bringing in designers like Kanye West creative director Virgil Abloh and his brand Off-White as well as Sergio Hudson.

Of course, Roach is not likely to recede into the darkness anytime soon. In addition to functioning as the creative director of Daya by Zendaya, Roach reportedly hopes to delve into his own line, possibly starting with menswear. In the not so distant future, expect to see his work on the Spider-man: Homecoming red carpets he’ll be dressing Zendaya for. Another notable African American stylist to make the influential list of power stylists in Hollywood? Jason Bolden who prepped Taraji P. Henson and Ava DuVernay for their turns on the red carpet this season.
