Last night (May 7), New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art held its annual Met Gala, the opening party for its spring exhibition that doubles as a fund-raiser for the museum’s Costume Institute. Each year, the themed party, which held the first Monday in May, is considered one of the biggest events in fashion. This year’s theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. Celebrities fused their imaginations with their style and were inspired by saints, demons, churches and other aspects of the religion.

Rihanna graced the red carpet wearing a bejeweled minidress beneath a flowing overcoat from Maison Margiela designed by John Galliano. She also wore a bishop’s hat designed by Stephen Jones.

Cardi B

The mother-to-be wore a bejeweled Moschino gown with a matching choker and headpiece. She was accompanied by designer Jeremy Scott, who coordinated his moto jacket and pants with the “Drippin” rapper’s ensemble.

SZA was celestial in pink silk tulle and a multilayered gown paired with matching jewel-embellished bodice and thigh-high boots by Atelier Versace.

2 Chainz & Kesha

2 Chainz proposed to Kesha on the red carpet of the gala wearing a custom Atelier Versace peak lapel tuxedo with Swarovski-embroidered Versace lettering. Kesha wore a crystal-beaded fringe dress from the same brand.

Janelle Monáe

Janelle Monáe wore a custom Marc Jacobs colorblock Gabardine skirt suit with a jeweled headpiece and hat.

Lena Waithe

The Emmy-Award winning writer wore a suit with a rainbow-colored cape, representing the LGBTQIA community, by Carolina Herrera.

J. Lo & Alex Rodriguez

Jenny from the Block attended the Met Gala wearing a custom design by Balmain.

Issa Rae

Rae was styled in a belted gown from the Michael Kors Collection.
