Despite operating in what seems to be a life of glamor and easy living, many supermodels also have tumultuous stories to share. Airing on HBO, filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders' documentary "About Face: Supermodels Then And Now" centers on the stories of some of the most famous supermodels of all-time. Bethann Hardison and Beverly Johnson, two models of color who were not only pioneers in the industry, but mavericks as well, receive their fair share of face time in this Sundance 2012 flick. The seasoned vets shared their experiences and lessons learned throughout their extensive careers, discussing personal topics like plastic surgery, self-esteem, drug abuse, sexual harassment, and racism.

Hardison, in particular, has blazed quite the trail for those coming behind her. The first Black editor-at-large for "Vogue Italia" online, the former supermodel ushered in and helped to cultivate the careers of Naomi Campbell, Tyson Beckford, and Iman. She was also one of the first Black models for Calvin Klein and Oscar de La Renta.
