EBONY.com beauty and style editor Melanie Yvette Martin caught up with one of our favorite hair stylists Ted Gibson behind the scenes at Carmen Marc Valvo to talk the upcoming spring 2015 hair trends. For Ted, this was a fun chance to create a look out of the ordinary, as Valvo was inspired by 1950s retro. Ted’s take on the hairstyles of that decade: a glamorous, loosely pulled back bun with an added gray streak.

EBONY: What’s the inspiration for Carmen Marc Valvo’s fashion story?

Ted Gibson: Carmen is the inspiration. The idea was this ’50s glamour woman and glamour guy. What’s great about Carmen is that he always thinks of a very interesting silhouette. The whole idea is that this is not just ’50s retro, it’s ’50s sexy. In his collection, there’s see-through panels where you can see the boy shorts, and just sexy pieces all around. I loved the fact that I couldn’t create something that was simple and something that wouldn’t be fun.

For the look, I immediately I thought of 50 Shades of Gray. I wanted to put a gray streak in front of the hair. So I took this really serious ’50s idea and turned it into something kind of magical.

EBONY: Would you suggest the everyday woman doing the gray streak?

TG: I think it’s pretty fun. You know, I think wearing color isn’t what it used to be. You see mainstream girls in all parts of America adding bold color to their hair.

EBONY: We rarely see Black women rock a gray streak, but this could change that. How do you feel about Black women of all ages wearing the trend?

TG: For me, I’m always about breaking the rules. We have to live. Have fun!
