A memorial fund honoring the late Philando Castile has alleviated lunch debt for students throughout St. Paul, Minn.

Castile was killed by ex-police officer Jeronimo Yanez last July during a traffic stop. A beloved school cafeteria supervisor, he paid for the lunches of students who couldn’t always afford it. Now, a professor at Inver Hills Community College is honoring that legacy with the “Philando Feeds the Children” fund.

“We just had this little idea that we were going to help do Mr. Phil’s job and make sure you guys have good lunch to eat every day,” CBS Minnesota captured professor Pam Fergus telling a crowded cafeteria at J.J. Hill Montessori, where Castile worked.

Once Fergus’ online fundraising campaign for “Philando Feeds the Children” raised $70,000, the money was presented to students with the assistance of Castile’s mother, Valerie Castile.

“We as a community have to work together in order for things to work,” Valerie said. “This would’ve meant everything to him.”

Currently, the campaign has reached over $73,000 of its $100,000 goal to feed St. Paul public elementary schools. You can donate to the campaign here.
