Jay Rock is largely considered the MC that put hip-hop’s most revered label, Top Dawg Entertainment, on the map. Sunday night, the Watts, California spitter received his just due when he walked away from the 61st Annual Grammys with his first award from the academy for 2018 smash, “King’s Dead,” featuring labelmate Kendrick Lamar and Atlanta rapper Future.  

Just minutes before learning of his win for Best Rap Performance, the artist spoke to EBONY about goals for the year, to which he replied, “I’m ready to win these Grammys!” The MC also received nominations for Best Rap Song and for his contributions to the Black Panther Soundtrack.  

Rock went on to discuss TDE’s dominance within music and reveals that he was supposed to attend the ceremony three years ago, but couldn’t due to injuries sustained from a bike accident.

“Laid up at the hospital, I was supposed to be at the Grammys. Look at how God work, man. Three years later, I’m nominated for three Grammys and I’m here right now."
