Surprisingly, American vehicles from Chrysler, Ford and GM dominates Insure.com’s list of the least expensive 2012 vehicles to insure. Yes, there are a few imports sprinkled in amongst the crowd. As you thumb through the gallery, don’t expect to find any sport cars or high-dollar rides. It’s all about affordability here. Sport cars are typically the highest to insure at an average premium of about $1,776 annually, while minivans are the least expensive to insure at $1,227, according to Insure.com.

Safety ratings, the type of car selected, the engine type (4-cylinder, 6-cylinder, 8-cylinder) and one’s personal driving history are just a few of the factors that can literally control one’s cost.
