On July 9, 2023, at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles, California, the pink carpet was rolled out as the stars premiered the upcoming Barbie movie hitting theaters later this month. Barbies and Kens of all shapes, sizes and races were in attendance, and each one brought their own doll-like look. Our July 2023 Cover Star Issa Rae was also there and gave us all the Black Barbie vibes we needed—but of course, we don't expect anything less.
The premier brought out rapper Nicki Minaj, who wrote a song for the soundtrack called "Barbie World", which features the new girl on the block, Ice Spice. Minaj, who has been calling herself a Barbie for what feels like her entire career, said it was a full circle moment to be a part of the movie.
"I couldn't really afford Barbies when I was little," the "Starships" emcee said. "I probably had one Barbie, so now I get to be a part of the whole Barbie moment and movement."
The Trinidadian rapper wore a look inspired by the Barbie diva collection, although many fans were shocked to see that she wasn't decked out in her signature pink hair or clothing.
