It was a day filled with Black excellence last Saturday as entertainment execs, creatives and influencers gathered for the highly-anticipated brunch event.
Founded by Trell Thomas, The Black Excellence Brunch is an event series modeled after the Black family tradition of Sunday dinner. The brunch caters to the Black and Brown community, creating a safe space for us to be unapologetically ourselves, while developing relationships through networking over cocktails, a soul food styled meal, and a discussion based interview honoring the journey and latest achievements of hand-picked influential professionals in our community.
“The big takeaway for me is being able to celebrate us in a space where we can show up as our authentic selves and feel love and appreciated, because we need more of that,” said founder Trell Thomas.
The event was held at the Gathering Spot in Los Angeles immersed with superhero themed decor and cocktails inspired by Warner Brothers' new upcoming film, Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The film stars Meagan Good, the chosen honoree of the March brunch series.
“When you think about cultural icons, when you think about people who have carried the torch of Black excellence, she’s been doing it. I'm really excited to finally be able to figuratively and literally give her her flowers, because she deserves it,” shared Trell Thomas.
Entertainment journalist Gia Peppers moderated the one-on-one discussion that centered around giving Meagan her flowers, as well as allowing her the opportunity to share insight on her journey in the entertainment industry, and share how her faith in God has helped her overcome hardships she’s faced along the way.
"My heart is so full, and I feel so thankful. The fact that this moment has been taken to just love on me and to pour into me, and to cover me in such sincerity and honesty, it’s just been one of the best experiences, and I'm just honestly super super thankful,” said honoree Meagan Good.
Notable guests there to support Good included Shoniqua Shandai, Crystal Renee Hayslett, KJ Smith, Skyh Black and more.
“It’s especially important for me to be here today, and to hear, thee Meagan Good. She has been a leading woman in Hollywood for over 3 decades. I am on my leading lady journey, and everything she said was absolutely what I needed to hear. It was so important for me to be here to support her and to support our really good friend Trell,” shared BET Sistas star KJ Smith shared.
With all the rave centered around the Black Excellence Brunch, it has truly become a household name when it comes to events representing the black community.
“It’s just important to me to be able to make sure that our cultural icons and heroes get their flowers. There’s just so many people that I think are incredible that I want to celebrate,” shared Thomas on what builds the momentum for him to keep it going.
